So come Fall, I have to teach English, Science, Math, and Social Studies. I have been trying to brush up on my History and Science (red shift and blue shift? Who remembers this stuff?) And I am trying to remember or come up with any books that I can use for my students. They are middle/high school aged, but most of their reading levels are below grade level. I have a couple that are pretty high. Anyway, I was wondering if any of you had any suggestions-both books that you had to read for school, or books you think teenage boys would enjoy.

Grapes of wrath...Lord of The Flies...Those were a couple I remember having to read. I'll keep thinking.
The House on Mango Street Sandra Cisneros
I read this book in tenth grade. Loved it. It's a short book, a novella, if you will. It's about Esperanza, a 12-year old narrator, and it deals with racisim/discrimination, poverty, power to change dreams, self image...growing up...blah blah blah.
The Color Purple Alice WalkerSomeone else recommended this title. Heard it's good...that's all I know...
Night Elie WieselA very short piece, highly recommended by the famous Mrs. Coon. I have yet to read it. I have read Wiesel's famous speech to the President, appealing that indifference be done away with. Wiesel survived the holocaust. I believe that Night is about the holocaust, though I'm not 100% sure.
Stop Pretending Sonya Sones Read this in tenth grade. I liked it. A book of poetry, so it might not be what you're looking for. It's a true story about the effects that ripple through the family due to the narrator's sister going insane. One of the main themes: everything that happens to those we love happens to us.
The Pearl and Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck Read both of these in tenth grade. Steinbeck's so famous, the titles speak for themselves. Take them, or throw them out the window.
A Separate Peace John Knowles Read this in tenth grade as well, it's a longer novel. It's about the early years of WWII, in a prep school. Some themes are: war, struggle within oneself to become better, illusion vs. reality, realizing the truth, and dark forces.
I'll keep my eyes peeled. I'll read the books that I recommended but haven't read, as well. I'll get back to you on that. :)
Whoops...teenage boys???
Uhhh... I'm not so sure about the ones I suggested now... ;)
Thanks Nat. I think you should just come teach the English portion...listen to you-themes in the book etc. etc. Maybe I should come get all of your materials and just use them! I think these will work with boys...we'll see.
Its is either "The Monster" or "Monster." I'll look it up. Short, easy to read. Its about a young teenager boy who is on trial for assisting a murder. Excellent for boys.
I'll look up the list they gave me in Y.A. English classes from college, and see if I can find the "how to teach these books" website. If I can find it I'll e-mail it to you.
you are a renaissance woman, meg! my goodness...I'm glad I don't have to teach all those subjects! good luck! if I think if anything, I'll let you know... :)
